Rarely are you afforded this freedom

Art is the one place we can express ourselves fully and completely. Our lives are filled with social obligations and expectations that tend to keep us in a box. Art and illustrating offers us an outlet where we truly can be free. We can create fully uninhibited and we must. I don’t believe in putting a box around creativity and categorizing it. Creativity flows from you, the unique individual that you are. In no time in history has there been someone like you, nor will there ever be. Keep this in mind when creating.
Art is a place where we can bring our full selves. We can express ourselves in an undiluted fashion. It is the one place we can express those parts of ourselves that we truly mean to bring to the world. Let your creative juices flow. Hold nothing back. We are here on this earth for a brief moment. Make every creative en-devour count. Release your shackles. Forget about what someone said years ago. They may have been having a bad day or just might have been wrong about the awesome artist you are. Having a short term memory doesn’t just apply to athletes. Create without inhibition. After all, it’s why we do what we do!

Letting the Drawing come to you

I have often been asked “what is the key to drawing?”. It is most assuredly approaching each drawing with a certain looseness. The drawing will take care of itself, as long as you can get out of the way and let it happen. I think you will find that most artists will agree with me. My best work has been done when I’m either, thinking about something else or in that “flow” state. It’s important to look at drawing as a fun and meditative exercise, no matter what deadlines you are facing or who you are working for. Your best work will come from a place of deep concentration but also a place where everything flows from your hand to the pencil tip, nothing forced and nothing sought after.
This can be done by relaxing your expectations of what your drawing should look like. Every artist knows that a high level of expectation leads to a high level of frustration. By relaxing our expectations (and this goes for everything thing we do), we can live in a much more peaceful place. A place where our drawings find us instead of us seeking out the perfect drawing. I assure you this will help you in your journeys as an artist! May you enjoy every second of your illustrations/paintings.
