Creating from a place of detachment

Every artist has been through it. The time when what’s in your head is just not translating onto the page. The more we cling and struggle with a piece, the more it seems to lose it’s original intent. The more it loses it ‘soul’ so to speak. We have all heard the phrase, ‘detach from your work’. A relaxed and detached mindset is the difference between enjoying every piece you do and wrestling with your work (a form of constant struggle).  When one doesn’t detach from there work it’s like trying to open a gate without the key. Fortunately the key is under the mat and you will not expend much energy (or money) to open the gate. A relaxed mindset can be achieved by meditating before you get down to creating. The time spent meditating will be paid back to you ‘tenfold’ once you get into the habit. Meditation allows us to enjoy each piece we produce and gives us the opportunity to get ‘out of our heads’ and let the pen/brush or stylus do the work. The benefits of meditation are well documented. Why not bring the wisdom of the mystics and sages to the table when creating. I remember a great quote from the movie ‘The Legend of Bagger Vance’ (directed by Robert Redford). Bagger Vance (played by Will Smith) said something very profound, yet very simple. He said ‘your hands is wiser than your head is ever gonna be’. It’s this quote that emphasises how important it is to be present and relaxed while creating.  Meditation allows you to get to that place quite quickly, you might even find the residual benefits in everyday life to be quite staggering! Paint/draw/ create without inhibition!

Finding flow

While reading the book The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific by J. Maarten Troost I came across this passage ‘In which the author expresses some dissatisfaction with the state of his life, ponders briefly prior adventures and misfortunes, and with the aid of his beguiling girlfriend, decides to quit the life that is known to him and make forth with all due haste for parts unknown’. The poor fellow goes through things that are both humorous and tragic. While reading the book I realized that the book is manifest from a trying circumstance. It is both entertaining as it is a medium to learn something about the human condition. As artists we sometimes wait for everything to be perfect to produce a piece or a draft that could lead to something amazing. Perhaps it is in the muddiness of life that we can find true inspiration and a stepping off point for something truly valuable. It reminds me of a quote, ‘If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two impostors just the same’ by Rudyard Kipling (Even his name is artistic!). Perhaps creating is just an expression of lifes events, both good and bad. Nothing ‘has to be perfect’ nor indeed ever will be. Art helps us express the messiness of human existence and out of that, the birth of something beautiful!
  • Let lifes events shape you rather than burden you!

Final products take time

Hi Guys and Girls, I am writing this blog to ensure you that some final products take time to evolve. Sometimes we think that the artist has sat down and produced a masterpiece. This is not true. Every artist will tell you the same thing. It takes time for a drawing/painting/piece to evolve. The countless hours of practice have led to the result you see in front of you. It’s not natural ability that sets someone apart as an artist. It’s tireless hours spent practicing different angles and new techniques that has set the artist apart. Natural ability will only take you so far, and if this ability is not molded and honed, the skill or potential will not be fully realized. Don’t worry if your first iterations are not what you feel they should be. I can attest to the fact that many drawings and styles evolve with time. Developing your potential is something you need to be committed to as well as proud of. Give yourself a pat on the back for each milestone achieved. Every hurdle overcome is a victory and should be treated as such. You just need to believe in yourself and practice as much as you can can. The sky is the limit after that!!!!!

Don’t be bashful with your art

I think at times we as artists try to hold back our work from the world. Either worrying about what someone might say or we might just be waiting for the perfect piece to show the world. I think that this course of action misses the point of the what art is all about. Art is freedom. It is presenting a piece of ourselves, as we stand in the moment – warts and all! The whole key to art is unencumbered expression. When I see people withholding something they are dying to express it is ‘such a shame’ on so many levels. Both the audience and the person doing the producing are missing out on the experience of receiving and giving. Please don’t be bashful when it comes to your work. How many manuscripts have been written that are lying in a closet somewhere. How many beautiful paintings are sitting in someones basement, collecting dust. There is no shame in presenting yourself boldly to this world. It is a shame to never have had the opportunity to show the world what you really can do.
  • Don’t be shy when it comes to expressing your talents to the world.
  • Artistic expression is all about creating without inhibition.

Detatching from the piece

The best piece of advice I received from a a judge at an art competition was, ‘to detach from the piece’. She explained that while producing a piece and once a piece is completed the best thing you can do, ‘is to create without clinging onto your work’. It definitely helped me create more freely. However, it’s a tough lesson to implement. It’s counter-intuitive to think that the wrist, hand and pen/stylus should work freely without a great deal of clinging to what you are working on. Being to absorbed in a piece can have it’s negative side. We obsess over our work rather than letting it come from a very free and natural place. It has taken me quite some time to realize that the act of letting go opens up a vast creative platform to which their are no limits.

Find new ways of approaching your art

My favourite art teacher always did things differently. She would always hold the brush at the very top while she painted. I thought to myself, “how does she get any control doing that?”. That was the point. She always encouraged me to forego control. Her techniques seemed strange at first but they helped me to realize a new level of artistic freedom. She would use sticks to paint things (and they all looked amazing!), she would tell me to squint my eyes to see value and tone. It was so easy to see why she was the most popular art teacher in town. Nothing she did was inside the box and I found it liberating to be around someone like that.
We go through our whole lives conditioned to think that there are only certain ways of doing things. Conforming is the greatest enemy to the artist and creator. Once you start living like there is no box, that’s when art becomes true expression. No longer constrained by the four walls that entrap true expression we are free to create from a very open place. This kind of expression also teaches us that there is never one right answer. Liberation is the daily goal of the artist. Piece by piece we can tear down the box that is inhibiting our creativity. Then we are free to express our true selves in a very natural and fluid way.

Your voice needs to be heard

Sometimes as artists we forget how valuable our gifts can be. Someone says something to criticize our work and we shrink back into our shell. My hope is that you’ll read this and realize we need to stand up and be counted. Art brings beauty into the world. It brings another perspective me might not yet have thought about. If something resides within us the story needs to be told. Lest it be lost forever. Who knows the impact you can have until you lay everything out on the table. You might just look back one day and say ‘yeah, I did share my uninhibited creativity’. I suggest that is something noble and worthy of pursuit.
An inexpensive way to get started with digital art is to buy a small Wacom tablet and a program like Manga Studio. I wish I had known this when I first started. You can start your journey as a digital artist without to much of an initial outlay. I hope this helps!

Don’t hide your gifts

Often times we keep our art locked in a basement or hidden high up in a cupboard somewhere. Without realizing it we are taking away from the magic that art can bring the world. In no time in history has there been someone like you, nor will there be someone like you in the future. It would be a shame to keep your unique take on the world hidden because of what someone might say or believe about our work. Inhibition is the great slayer of creativity. Find places and people that encourage your creative expression. Others will be encouraged to follow your lead.  I promise you the world will thank you for it.
  • Let the world see your gifts.
  • You might never know who you are encouraging to do the same.

Rarely are you afforded this freedom

Art is the one place we can express ourselves fully and completely. Our lives are filled with social obligations and expectations that tend to keep us in a box. Art and illustrating offers us an outlet where we truly can be free. We can create fully uninhibited and we must. I don’t believe in putting a box around creativity and categorizing it. Creativity flows from you, the unique individual that you are. In no time in history has there been someone like you, nor will there ever be. Keep this in mind when creating.
Art is a place where we can bring our full selves. We can express ourselves in an undiluted fashion. It is the one place we can express those parts of ourselves that we truly mean to bring to the world. Let your creative juices flow. Hold nothing back. We are here on this earth for a brief moment. Make every creative en-devour count. Release your shackles. Forget about what someone said years ago. They may have been having a bad day or just might have been wrong about the awesome artist you are. Having a short term memory doesn’t just apply to athletes. Create without inhibition. After all, it’s why we do what we do!
